Road Trip 2008

Pennsylvania Grand Canyon- Wellsboro Pennsylvania

The power of Niagara Falls- Horseshoe falls Ontario Canada viewed from the side

niagara falls

Our recent road trip including traveling across Northwest Pennsylvania and Niagara Falls. What was most interest to us was how involved Pennsylvania was with its history in energy. Pennsylvania was a leader in lumber, oil, and coal energy. These natural resources provided earlier generations with the fuel neccessary to heat their homes. These same resources may play an important part of our future energy needs as new technologies are developed. Did you know that as much as 80% of Pennsylvania premium crude oil reserves still remain underground! Other energy sources abound across the state as well. Traveling west across route 6 from Milford Pennsylvania you will see a mountain top with huge windmills that sprawl for several miles. In Kinzua Pennsylvania is a large hydo electric dam. In Niagara Falls Ontario, it is tremendously obvious of the power of water, when viewing the rushing falls there. They also harness this power with their hydro electric powerplant.

In Titusville Pennsylvania we witnessed the site of the very first oil well, drilled by Edwin Drake. This was the first commercial producing oil well. This well was only 59 feet deep! Just down the road in Oil City remains a producing oil well, the longest producing well in the world today.
